Visit Truckee-Tahoe developed a 12-page Sustainable Truckee Visitors Guide (print & digital) that explains how to make sustainable travel choices before and during their stay. The guide includes topics such as protecting Truckee's night skies, how to plan a car-free visit, shop and dine local, voluntourism opportunities, and more.
As a visitor, we hope you embody the mindset of a local by respecting Truckee-Tahoe. Ask yourself, what if this was my home? Extend the same love, care, and respect that you have for your home and everyone in it to the place we hold near and dear. Manners aren’t just for the dinner table anymore, they’re for the trail, the beach, and locals shops too.
Our Travel Alert page is updated daily with everything you need to know before visiting Truckee-Tahoe. Get the latest updates on wildfire preparedness, lodging, outdoor recreation, shopping, and dining.
Learn how you can be a responsible traveler - take the Truckee-Tahoe Traveler Responsibility Pledge to protect, preserve, and enhance our natural environment and all that depend on it. Plus, when you take the pledge, you'll be entered to win a Leave No Trace Deuter Dirtbag!
Try outdoor voluntourism on your next Truckee-Tahoe vacation! These outdoor volunteer events are a great way to meet locals, give back to your host community, and have a unique travel experience.
Always book lodging directly with local business owners for the best service, rates, availability and personal touch. When you shop with independent, locally owned businesses (clothing/gift shops sports retailers, local grocers) your dollars go directly into the Truckee-Tahoe community. This helps our tourism dependent economy grow and thrive, supporting local owners and employees and benefiting local non-profits. Experience the highest level of care and most importantly, you’ll have a significantly smaller environmental impact.
You’ve seen the highlights, now it’s time to explore hidden gems! Rather then vying for a parking spot at a busy trailhead, seek an off the beaten path experience for a more enjoyable experience, and one that’s better for the environment. Here are a few ideas, lay by the South Yuba River up by Rainbow Lodge, take a daytrip north and explore the rugged Sierra Buttes, or go bird watching along the Little Truckee River.
Share what you do to live green and hear from Truckee-Tahoe locals making climate choices in their everyday lives.
