Scenic landscapes aren’t all you’ll find in Truckee. Our vibrant Main Street is filled with charming boutique shops, mom ‘n pop diners and sophisticated restaurants influenced by the nearby San Francisco Bay Area food scene. There’s always an event or live music to catch, and plenty of shopping and dining to keep you busy during your visit.
If you’re a history buff, take the virtual walking tour and dive into the historic roots of downtown Truckee. Stroll past brick buildings that date back to the 1800s and watch daily trains roll through the center of town on the original route of the transcontinental railroad. Hundreds of years later, Main Street remains a hub of activity with shopping, dining, and year-round events.
Drive over the Truckee River on Brockway Road and continue a few minutes southeast of Historic Downtown. You’ll end up at The Rock, a compact dining and shopping district with excellent restaurants and garden seating, a lively brewery plus beauty and wellness services including Summit Sports Acupuncture, Sierra Symmetry, Pure Life Medical Spa and Coupe Sixty-One Hair Studio.
Don’t overlook this tucked away hidden gem, bustling with a little bit of everything - Camp 1 Fitness, a world-class fitness center owned and operated by Julia Mancuso (American World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist), Truckee Brewing Company, Pacific Crest Coffee Company, and more. Pioneer Center is where locals love to hang out and get a respite from peak season crowds. Getting here is easy on foot or by bike via the Pioneer Bike Path from Downtown Truckee or Trout Creek Trail from Tahoe Donner.

West of Historic Downtown, an array of shopping centers along Donner Pass Road offer a vast selection of restaurants and retail stores. There are multiple grocery stores, coffee shops, a hardware store, outdoor gear shops, etc. - convenient shops and services for all your needs. The Gateway Shopping Center houses Safeway, The Office BOSS Mail Center, and other shops. Further down the road at Westgate Center you'll find New Moon Natural Foods, Wild Cherries Coffee House, and more.
While food options at Donner Lake are few, the restaurants you will find are top notch. The east end of the lake has some of the best Huevos Rancheros in town at Donner Lake Kitchen and on the west end, you’ll find satisfying pub fare at The Pub at Donner Lake and homemade ice cream and pop up tacos at Little Truckee Ice Creamery.
Soaring Ranch is Truckee’s newest neighborhood, an up and coming district that promises a modern shopping and dining experience when it’s completed. It’s conveniently located near the Truckee Tahoe Airport off of Highway 267, close to Waddle Ranch trails and the Truckee Bike Park. Raley's O-N-E Market offers a unique grocery shopping experience with a curated selection of clean products, Martis Valley Massage offers intimate massage, and Mountain Hardware and Sports has everything you might need for home projects, outdoor sports, and everything in between.

Truckee is made up of several distinct neighborhoods that each have their own look, feel, and amenities. Depending on where you choose to stay, you may have convenient access to activities like hiking, biking, rock climbing, paddle boarding, skiing, or horseback riding.
Now here’s a neighborhood that celebrates the Truckee-Tahoe outdoor lifestyle with a wide variety of outdoor adventures and amenities including an equestrian center, golf course, mountain biking trails, cross country ski trails and a downhill ski area that’s a favorite among families with small children. There are also several dining options in this community including The Lodge Restaurant & Pub which is conveniently located on Northwoods Blvd. in the heart of Tahoe Donner.
Want to know where the locals live? Many choose to put down roots in Glenshire, also known as “the Shire”, a quiet neighborhood east of downtown. It’s known as the “banana belt” of Truckee and gets mild winter weather and some of the first snow-free trails in spring. Hop on the Legacy Trail at the Glenshire trailhead for incredible views of the Truckee River and a 4 mile walk into Historic Downtown. Glenshire is also the closest neighborhood to Reno - about 20 minutes on I-80 interstate highway.

While Donner Summit may seem like a journey out of town, it provides the best access to hiking and trail running on the Pacific Crest Trail, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing at Castle Peak, and rock climbing along Old Highway 40. It’s the highest elevation neighborhood so expect lots of snow in the winter that can stick around until early summer. Secret lakes and meadows abound in this area. Be sure and explore the Truckee Donner Land Trust to learn more about this area and their conservation work.
If relaxing by an alpine lake sounds appealing, you’ll love the Donner Lake neighborhood. There’s plenty of fun things to do in walking distance of a mountain home rental such as swimming, kayaking, and relaxing on beaches and piers. It’s in a convenient location just ten minutes from downtown Truckee in one direction and ten minutes from Donner Summit in the other. Donner Memorial State Park at the east end of the lake has a fascinating Visitor Center with exhibits on the areas history, including local Native Americans, the Donner Party, and builders of the transcontinental railroad.
You’re a stone’s throw from dining, shopping, and outdoor fun in this centrally located neighborhood. Downtown Truckee and the Rock shopping and dining district are just minutes away, as is the Truckee Bike Park and Truckee Regional Park where families love to have fun.
